Planteome Version 6.0 Release January 2026

The Planteome Project (http://planteome.org) is pleased to announce the latest release of the annotation database and ontology files. 

In this Planteome Version 6.0, there are 56,068 ontology terms, 3,373,985 data objects (bioentities) and 25,863,090 associations between bioentities and ontology terms. The Planteome database contains data from 125 plant taxa.

  • Changes and Updates to the annotation knowledgebase:

    - All annotation files are now available on the Planteome Git repository 
    - Created 4277 new annotations to plant cell terms from the Zhang et al, 2021 paper DOI:10.1038/s41467-021-22352-4
    - New annotations to the sources OryzaBase and GrainGenes databases
    - Updated all annotations for all obsolete terms, fixed incorrect aspects, etc
    - New annotation dataset to rice diseases

  • Updates and changes to the Planteome Reference Ontologies:
  • Plant Ontology: new terms added for plant gall, seedling, aggregate fruit and phloem parenchyma cell, in response to user requests, - 143 plural synonyms have been refactored to be consistent with OBO foundry specifications
  • Plant Trait Ontology: 31 new terms have been added, fixed ~90 terms that had no definition, reorganized several sections
  • Plant Experimental Conditions Ontology: Two new terms for biotic stresses and plant growth medium, fixed ~90 terms that had no definition, reorganized several sections 
  • Plant Stress Ontology: Now available on Planteome browser,  Added new disease terms for Musa, common bean, grape, potato sorghum and soybean. Total number of disease terms is now 614.  Animal damages are now in a separate hierarchy, rather than being listed as diseases.
    - Fixed many definitions, cross references and synonyms etc across all the ontologies
